NameDrop on D2L Brightspace

Status

Documented based on Brightspace LE LTI 1.3 spec. Not yet verified end-to-end against a production Brightspace instance — talk to NameDrop support to be the first to do so.

What you’ll get

NameDrop appears as an External Learning Tools quicklink that course staff insert into a course page. Students click the link to launch NameDrop with welcome+roster.

Caution

D2L Brightspace doesn’t have a native user-profile LTI placement. Per-user “Record my name” reach requires either an institutional theme override (HTML widget on the user homepage) or a course-level workaround.

Setup (one-time, by Brightspace admin)

Step 1: Get your NameDrop credentials

In your NameDrop dashboard at https://app.namedrop.io/integrations, click Connect D2L Brightspace. Note the URLs.

Step 2: Register NameDrop as an LTI 1.3 tool

1. Sign in as administrator.
2. Admin Tools → External Learning Tools → LTI Advantage tab.
3. Click Register Tool.
4. Standard: Standard
5. Name: NameDrop
6. Description: Hear name pronunciations
7. Domain: lti.namedrop.io
8. Redirect URLs: https://lti.namedrop.io/lti/launch
9. OpenID Connect Login URL: https://lti.namedrop.io/lti/login
10. Target Link URI: https://lti.namedrop.io/launch
11. Keyset URL: https://lti.namedrop.io/jwks/{your-tenant-id}
12. Extensions: check NRPS (Names and Role Provisioning) and Assignment and Grade Services if needed.
13. Click Register.

D2L issues a Client ID and Deployment ID.

Step 3: Create a Deployment

1. After registering, click View Deployments → New Deployment.
2. Tool: select NameDrop (just created).
3. Name: “NameDrop”
4. Make tool available to: select org units (specific course offerings or all).
5. Save.

Step 4: Connect to your NameDrop tenant

In your NameDrop dashboard, paste the Client ID and Deployment ID D2L issued. Save.

Step 5: Add a Quicklink to a course

In any course:

1. Course Admin → External Learning Tools → Manage External Learning Tool Links.
2. Click New Link.
3. Tool: NameDrop.
4. Title: NameDrop.
5. Save.
6. Insert the link into a course homepage or content topic.

Optional: Record-my-name placement

Repeat the Quicklink step with Custom Parameters in the link config: view=record-my-name. Title the link “Record my name” so students know what they’re getting.

Per-user placement (institutional theme override)

D2L’s standard LTI doesn’t reach the user profile / MyAccount widget area. The institutional path:

• MyAccount widget can include external HTML/links — your D2L admin or theme developer adds a “Record my name” link that opens NameDrop in a new tab. This isn’t LTI; it’s a static link with a separate token flow that NameDrop helps you set up.
• HTML widget on the homepage — similar approach, broader visibility.

FAQ

Q: Are NameDrop and Brightspace integration verified yet? A: Documented but not yet end-to-end verified. The first customer onboarding will lock these instructions in. If you’d like to be the first, contact NameDrop support — we’ll work alongside your admin during install.

Q: Does NameDrop see the Brightspace roster? A: Yes, if NRPS is enabled in the tool registration.

Q: How do I uninstall? A: External Learning Tools → NameDrop → Delete. Disconnect in your NameDrop dashboard.
